What is your keyword?

G. Malsawm Kipgen

You can find any definition and meaning in Google. What is interesting to note is that Google can find its own definition in Google. It is the world most popular search engine and can search itself. Isnt it fascinating? From geography to science and technology, definition and details are available. Any men who are not in the field of medical science can learn few simple medical terms. Same is the case with other fields. Information on news and events are just a type and click away. Back in 1990s, there were computers but not attractive, colourful and user friendly as it is today. These computers were installed in some schools but its commands and functions were very limited. At the dawn of 21st century, some changes were seen and there used to have an email and yahoo messenger for chatting. More or less, those things cant compete with the latest innovation of today.  Youths today who are in high and higher secondary school, college and even university level are very fortunate to have this era of Smartphone, internet and Google to aid them in their studies.

Google as you know is powerful and useful. All you need to do is to handle it with care. It can also be destructive for you if you are not careful and control your mind. It is like a horse which works according to your command. It goes where you want to take it, the direction of the keyword you type in Google search box. What keyword do you often type in that rectangular box? What do you read, see and hear on internet? Is it about study materials, inspirational words or about indecent things? Do you waste your time typing ephemeral words in the white empty space to see your desires while leaving your future bleak? Or do you use it wisely to upgrade your knowledge of the world and for your spiritual growth? Many I believe type the keywords for Korean boy/girl bands, American pop stars, football stars, models, hollywood stars etc in a search engine box. I have a bad feeling that the amount of search for worldly pleasure surpasses the amount of search for constructive things. Google I think must be burdened by the amount of rushing requests for worldly pleasure things. One preacher said to a youngster, You admire and love Cristiano Ronaldo so much but he doesnt know that you exist on earth. But the Lord your God can even count the number of hair strands on your head. Is it not a vain to search for someone, study his likes and dislikes who doesnt even know you exist, forget about care? Why would you not search for God instead who loves you so much? Oh! how folly is he who can't see farther beyond a temporal bliss. What a waste to chase degradable pleasures!

If you type the right keywords with a right intention, you are in the right place. One may find it hard to recall the story and the characters involved or remember the verse which touches you as you continue to read the bible. As has been said, Google can help you. There is a summary or clear explanation in short and simple for every Book of bible. In seconds, you can find the verse you are looking for. Cross check it with a printed one for certainty. If you are looking for words as salvation, courage in times of trouble, peace of mind, wisdom, overcoming doubt, blessing, advice, hope, relationship or trust, they are all there in bible and Google is at your service to simplify your search for answers. All you have to do is to type the right keyword. Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek Him with all their heart---- Ps 119:2.

THINK FOR HER

       Malsawm Kipgen

According to Bible, God made Adam (first man on earth) after He created Heaven and Earth, and all animal kingdoms, to rule over them. He saw His creation and was happy. However, He saw one void in His creation. He saw Adam was lonely. Therefore, He created Eve to be Adam’s companion. Both were under the same law of the God. The Bible clearly states that Eve was created for Adam’s companion and she was not his subordination. None was greater than another was.

J.S Mill, the political thinker who perceived Utilitarian Principle and the champion of women cause, rightly said that disparity between men and women prevailed because of men interested in women’s subordination. Mill claimed that since all women were brought up from childhood to believe- “that their ideal of character is the very opposite to that of men; not self-will, and government by self-control, but submission and yielding to the control of others.” Mill’s referent for the legal subordination of women was the mid 19th Century English law of the marriage contract. By this law, married Englishwomen could hold no property in their own name, and even if their parents gifted them any property that too belonged to their husbands. Unless a woman was legally separated from her husband, (a difficult and expensive process) even if she lived away from him, her earnings belonged officially to him. By law, only the father and not the mother was the guardian of a couple’s children. Mill also cited the absence of laws on marital rape to prove the inequality suffered by the Englishwomen of that time. Another ardent supporter of the rights of women, Feminism, ascribes women subordination to ‘patriarchal system of society’. It is a system of social structures and practices through which men dominate and exploit women. It is present in different institutions and structures from family to state to international relations.

Feminist scholars show that power relations are organized based on gender. The unequal struggle for power through history, where men established control led to the subordination of women because of their reproductive role. A socially constructed masculine experience is shown to be a universal experience and imposed on women and society as a whole. This preserves male privilege and reinforces social practices in the private and public spheres. Feminists see war not just as the impact on women approach, but as a system where the gender stereotypes are re-enforced and gender relations restructured. Women are concerned with war because women and children are victims of policies that they did not plan or execute. It is men who participate in and define public life, and take decisions about war and militarization. Even today, there are less than ten percent of women in most parliaments. In the Vietnam War, which devastated eighty percent of the vegetation, studies showed that it was the peasant women who bore the burden of finding wood for fuel and growing food. So feminist in International Relations do not argue for women’s equal rights to be part of the military or for the right to dominate. But they want the right to speak for peace and be in position where they can put this point of view.

The year that follows India’s independence, the status of Indian women was no better. The then government of Free India passed several Acts such as the Widow Remarriage Act, the Special Marriage Act (1954), the Hindu Succession Act (1956), the Hindu Marriage Act (1955), and the Dowry Prohibition Act etc to empower Indian women. The National Commission for Women was set up as statutory body in January 1992 under the National Commission for Women Act, 1990 (Act No. 20 of 1990 of Govt. of India) to : (1)Review the Constitutional and Legal safeguards for women; (2)Facilitate redressal of grievances; and (3)Advise the Government on all policy matters affecting women. In theory, all these Acts look appealing, but when it comes to practice nothing-concrete result is visible. Still, Indian women reeled under the impact of rigid Hindu cultural tradition and its unwanted dowry system. The status of Christian or Muslim women in India is no better.

In our society, how far has the equal status between different sexes is visible? Though we believe and somehow true that the status of Manipur women is far better than the rest of Indian women, there are instances where parent prefers to have male child than female one. If a son came late, the reason is demanded and if the reason is not logical, he is taught and excused him. But if a daughter came late, the parent would immediately throw an inconsiderate words without finding facts. This small thing brings a psychosomatic effect to the young women. I never like the fact that some parents ordered their daughters to stay indoor most of the time. No doubt, staying indoors has some advantages, as she would not listen to the useless gossip of her friends. She would learn culture, manner, develop the art of running family and others.

We should not forget that when women met, they not only gossip, they also discussed important issues pertaining to society and future career. Being together teaches them the importance of coordination. It trains them to be tough in order to survive in this male dominated world.  Sharing their thoughts heartens them.

Most of the time it is found that daughter is found far better than son. From a very tender age, she does household things thus easing her mother burden. Before marriage, she provides a financial support to the family as working women. Even after marriage, she has innumerable concerned for her family unlike son.

Why cant we have a vibrant women IPS officer amidst our society? Are we stopping our beloved because we do not have faith in her to endure such mannish job? or does our society not sanction a women to do such job that are considered a men job?

Dear parents, give her more space and encouragement, and the support she needs to overcome doubts.

TOGETHER AS ONE

T.L Kipgen

Rongmei tribe (Kabui as it is known to many) is a proud Naga but the irony is that they are denied tribe recognition by their own brethren in Nagaland. How shameful it is for a tribe who yell out their lungs proclaiming the name Naga proudly is denied recognition by none other than Nagas themselves. How pitiful it is to think that tribes like Tangkhul and Rongmei who extended the popularity of the name Naga to the whole of India through the mechanism of bandhs and blockades are not welcome as a recognized tribe by the Naga tribes of Nagaland.

It is beyond my understanding on why these tribal people wish to be known by that name despite no due recognition is bestowed upon them in Nagaland, a home State of the Nagas. The latest conversion of some sections of Aimol tribe to Naga fold makes me to wonder if becoming Naga can give someone a political, social and most importantly an economic power. If tribes like Chothe and Aimol get better education, their buying capacity is increasing, their standard of living is improving and their villages and roads are developing by being under Naga, there can be no objection of their choice of Naga over Chin-Kuki-Mizo. But their claim of born Naga should be discarded for future understanding.

While many tribes are rushing to become Naga just as the present queues in banks and ATMs, we the Chin-Kuki-Mizo people are fighting each other to become the finest opposing group. How disgraceful it is for some Eimi tribes of Ccpur to not only deny but ridicule Mizos who are open minded enough to give recognition to our tribes in Mizoram State. By googling the ST list of Mizoram, you (Ccpur people) will find your tribe’s name in the ST recognized list of Mizoram State. How fortunate are we the denial of Mizo get recognition in Mizoram state, in contrast to the Naga supporter (Rongmeis) who gets no recognition in Nagaland?

Why are we in a denial mode? What good does it bring to deny among each other? Is it not fallout of our denial for brotherhood as one in Chikim that forced us to take help from Naga in the name of tribal unity? Is Naga community showing any sign of tribal unity as it claimed? ‘Together as one unit in Chikim’ can be much better than the already failed tribal unity.

Unlike single Naga nomenclature, we have three known nomenclatures the solidarity and unity of which can be maintained by accepting each other nomenclature. Major tribe like Lai will call themselves Chin in Chin State whereas Lai of Mizoram side will call themselves Mizo people. If one Lai family of Mizoram visits Chin State for a short period, people there will like to address them as Chin irrespective of which Chikim nomenclature they may belong to. It is where the word ‘Acceptance’ becomes very important. Not just Lai people there are many sub tribes who are found each in Chin, Kuki or Mizo nomenclature. These many sub tribes have to cultivate the essence of acceptance for each nomenclature as theirs.

In metropolitan cities, people may want to know our identity. They may ask, are you Kuki or Naga, or Mizo or Naga? The best answer I could give for question like, ‘are you Mizo or Naga’ is: - ‘I am known as Kuki in my State but Mizos are my blood brothers and we are addressed as Mizo in Mizoram. So, in part I’m Mizo’.

The focal point of this write-up is that we the Chikim people desperately need to understand one another instead of opposing and denying which only benefits our sly neighbours. We need to showcase our support for one another so that neighbours do not take advantage of our dissimilar views and opinions. We need to show more of our similarities than differences so that communities like Meiteis and Nagas have some respect for us.

Let us resolve to do away with our old habits of distrusting one another, extraneous pride and preoccupied tiny mindset. Together as Chikim we are mightier than Nagas. Long live Chikim family.

MANIPUR AS A TOURIST DESTINATION

Cuddling inside a lush green corner of North East India lies a tiny Shangri La called Manipur. Literally which means - ‘A Jeweled Land’ this diminutive area is an authentic delight on the globe where Mother Nature has been unstinting in her gratuity. Blessed with a hygienic climate, famed for its all your own edifying prototype and its lush picturesque splendor, endow the tourists a temptation to stopover at Manipur.

Intact and purely untouched Manipur vows to be the grand discovery for the vacationers. An oval shaped dale surrounded by the God’s crafted green hills, prosperous in art and custom has stimulated similes as the "Switzerland of the East" with its garrulous torrents, beautiful blooming of one of the rarest flora on earth, lethargic lakes and nibbling rivers.
Manipur is a mini India. It is a land of diversity. From the smallest group Tarao tribe to the largest community Meitei, there is diversity in religion, food habits, gown and language. The beautiful thing about Manipur however though is that the indigenous people belong to Tibeto-Burman group which means they originated from the same place or are from the same ancestor. The dale state of Manipur is enclosed by Nagaland in the north, Mizoram in the south, Myanmar in the east and Cachar of Assam in the west.
Manipur offers the tourists or the nature lovers an awe striking sight which can keep one imagining. No precious thing comes in big package. Like a small diamond buried underneath, Manipur is a petite but priceless land on earth which remain unblemished and unearth.

You will not see anywhere on earth what you can see in Ima Market. Ima Market is the only market in the world which is exclusive for the womenfolk. Varieties of items are sold here. One can enjoy seeing the womenfolk selling their goods some of which are not available in any other place. The Manipur State Museum in the hearts of Imphal exhibits numerous mores, nature, art forms and the past of the state. The Museum has urbanized currently into an adaptable source and boasts of proficiency in diverse arms. The galleries illustrated unusual facets of the state through illumination upon nearly every feature viz. Ethnology, Natural History, Art work and Handicraft, Archeology etc.

A small village situated near the east of Imphal, Andro is a small hamlet and is popularly known for its pottery. DEAR YOUTHS' BEHAVE WELL INSIDE CHURCH

Imagine that you have a visitor or a guest. He came in and went straight to your refrigerator without your consent; ate all the stuff you put inside the fridge. He spat on all the clothes put inside your wardrobe. He then went to your bedroom and slept on your bed. How would you feel about the careless attitude of your visitor? Happy? Definitely not. You would want the visitor/guest to behave well and respect your home.
If a mortal human like you demand respect and manner from a visitor inside your home, then why do you not think that our Almighty God also wants the same from you when you are inside His home. Why do you misbehave and disrespect the sanctity of Church by Whatsapping, Facebooking or playing App Games inside Church when our main purpose for coming to Church is to worship Him only and nothing else. When you get bored, satan starts to play his devilish policy to divert you from God. But by possessing mobile you are making it easier for satan to conquer your mind and body.
If you have a strong faith like young Joseph (read Genesis 39: 6-23) who was not easily tempted, there is no harm in bringing mobile with you in the church. But it would be better if you not all bring the mobile inside the church. No mobile no temptation. No mobile no trouble. Church service is just 2-3 hours. Can't you bear the pain of separating from your mobile  for just a short duration for Him? I wonder how much it will affect those who do not spare church if angels say no permission to playing of facebook, whatsapp and all types of social media in heaven.
FEARLESS MEN OF FAITH

When King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia attacked Jerusalem, he took some prisoners with him in the land of Babylon. Among them were Daniel and his friends Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego who were chosen to serve in the royal court. These four friends ate pure vegetables and drank water only. It might be tempting for them to try foreign foods like wine and meat but they resisted them by their strong fate. Put yourself in their shoes and imagine what you might do. You are away from your home. Alcohol, women and all kinds of stuffs are at your service. Will you resist or try it? The good friends were not only faithful but fearless. When King Nebuchadnezzar ordered every soul in the province of Babylon to bow down before the gold statue made by himself, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego did not flinch a bit from their stand of bowing down to their living God only. (Daniel 3: 18). Will you sell your faith at the face of challenges or be brave like these friends no matter what?

PICTURE DON'T SAY EVERYTHING

-Malsawm Kipgen

The phrase Picture dont say everything may be defined as the inability of a picture to carry a complete information.  A picture can be of two types: good picture and bad one. You can assume that a good picture can speak a thousand words. But can you say for sure that the bad one also has the same potentiality to speak a thousand words? As it turns out, a picture doesnt necessarily say a thousand words.

In this present generation where internet rules our lives, we cannot ignore the fact that texts still continue to dominate the content of the page. The Internet  or more specifically the World Wide Web  has revolutionized the way we publish and consume information. One of the most noticeable innovations fostered by the Web was the ability to mix text with other media such as pictures and videos, which led to the birth and success of companies like Flickr, imgur, Instagram, YouTube and DailyMotion. The ability to publish multimedia content has been a driver of other paradigm shifts in our behavior, such as online shopping; where would Flipkart be without product images?

However, it is easy to overlook the fact that text still dominates online information exchange. The vast majority of activities we do online are still fundamentally based on reading text: social media, news, search, e-mail, product reviews and many others. It has been estimated that more than 80% of the activities we do online are text-based. While many of these online activities are enhanced by multimedia content, the bulk of the information still comes from text, and thats unlikely ever to change.

In this age of modern technology sharing pictures are as easy as drawing an apple by a class VII standard. The pictures share in social media especially on facebook regarding news photo clip by so called facebook journalists wanna be famous can be sometimes questionable. Bad peoples are everywhere. They have also invaded facebook. Many have fallen prey to the fox in sheeps skin picture of these cunning people. These people are generally operating from outside India. They used faked pictures as an instrument to extract money from the others sitting on the other side. Some will use pictures of a poor human being in a dilapidated condition, saying this is my father, uncle etc to arrest the emotional feelings of his/her target.

Pictures may express moods but not the hidden feelings of a person or a thing. You might think the woman in the picture is smiling but you never know what she really feels. Pictures are not Gods creation. The real me created by God and a picture of me created by phone or digital camera are poles apart. They say if you want to see the real face of Bollywood actresses, visit them early in the morning. Photo-shoot after intense make-ups will surely produce wow! from you. But who knows your star actress might be uglier than your next neighbour girl. The most common phenomena of such earth-heaven difference picture are with the profile pictures of a beautiful and an exception group of women. I would rather use the term beautiful, because they are indeed beautiful in their profile pics. Edit after edit makes a woman a beautiful woman. Sometimes men who are unlucky with girls in real life resort to such tactics to gain attention from girls. There is a case where two opposite sex who knew each other on facebook met in real life. When they met they were full of surprises as the woman thought the man she is going to meet will be as handsome as Brad Pitt and the man had the same thought that this woman will be prettier than Hollywood actresses. Their meeting was the alpha and omega. Pictures can be deceptive and devoid of real entity.

The thoughts and expression of a photographer or an artist may be misunderstood or misinterpreted by the viewers or the observers. It is likely that the conception/idea about a particular picture may be different between an artist and an observer. Also people cannot tell the character of a person simply by looking at the picture. Picture can portray the positive part of human personality by unrevealing the negative aspect of it. For example, a renowned singer is an alcoholic addict. The company who sponsor him/her portray him/her as a good Samaritan by asking him/her to act for a good cause (like handling out financial assistance to the victims of earthquake) for a photo shoot. Thus nobody even a single soul has any idea about his/her other side of a coin.

LET ME AVER SOMETHING

Malsawm Kipgen

In one of my write-ups in Sangai Express, I quoted Manipur as ‘mini – India with its diverse culture and religion. (Manipur of my dreams, Dated 13 April 2010). Sometime later, I read about our CM using the same quote in one of his public speeches published in various newspapers. Shall we call it natural to have problems in our state because it is very diverse in nature?

Congress stronghold lies in the meticulous use of Unity in Diversity. It is the very ideology that let Congress win the heart of minority communities like Muslims and Christians in India. Manipur being a land of diversity, congress party seems to be enjoying the fact. Our CM and congress party never leave the stone unturned when it comes to getting the opportunity to speak about peaceful co-existence among different communities. The idea of ‘mini India’ with its unity in diversity is as sweet as the honey.

Where does Manipur go wrong if the state government endorsed ‘unity in diversity’? Why do we see diverse opinions if peaceful co-existence and equal development are the essence of state government? For me, ‘unity in diversity’ is a mere joke if we do not profess oneness in equal opportunity. No doubt, the people of hills and valleys are treated equally by the government but the disparity of opportunity between the two is immense. With all those trash, reeking drains, potholes, uneven road and powder like dust particle hovering in the air as a result of bad road condition, indeed Imphal city needs a lot of fund to develop. Nevertheless, some hill people coming down from the remotest areas to Imphal are in awe when they see Imphal because it has infrastructures that these hill and remote people have never seen in their lifetime. Shall we call it their fate to not have that kind of infrastructures in their areas? Is it a crime to offer them some developmental infrastructures for their well being? Why is government silent? For sure, Manipur is not another Sikkim. Manipur government is not only weak in governance but also lack the heart of a good Samaritan to bring about development for justice in the hills. What is the point of boasting about our beautiful face when the rest of our body is shabby and dirty? We need to come out of unending cycle of blame game. (Local MLAs gobble the fund, centre does not sanction the fund and this and that).

If government is committed to upholding ‘unity in diversity’, major tribal languages have to be given the status of compulsory subject for high school? In addition to Meitei Mayek, an approved syllabus and compulsory subject for high school students irrespective of region or community, major tribal languages such as Tangkhul Naga and Thadou Kuki must be promoted and included as compulsory subject for all students in high school. Is it not a sheer selfishness on the part of the state government to promote only one language while ignoring others if it stands by unity in diversity? Promotion of other tribal languages should also be taken up phase by phase. Tribal these days are language conscious. If implemented in school, this may add an extra burden to students but this type of endeavor will surely bring some respect for tribal language among young students. This may seem a pipe dream or herculean task but this is the very foundation on which ‘unity in diversity’ must be built. There are so many things apart from these that government must give their ears to remove disparity and barriers in the social fabric of unity in diversity.

As the long as the state government do not start from the grass root level, as long as the government endorse ‘unity in diversity’ in spirit only in our so called mini India, the notion of yours and ours will continue to haunt us. For a change to take place in the path of understanding and strong relationship, let the government understanding the ground reality and put all nice idea into practice. Lastly, unity in oneness (common playground) is the stepping stone for unity in diversity.

LESSON FROM SADAR HILLS

T.L Kipgen

Since the beginning of launching the full fledged district status for Sadar Hills till today the Naga under the banner of UNC and ANSAM have been blocking the way just as the erstwhile Berlin Wall was hindering the easy passage of German people. The selfish tactics of UNC and ANSAM has impoverished not only the Kuki community but also other communities like Nepali and Naga. Would it not be easier for people of Makhan villagers to travel to Kanggui (Kangpokpi) than to travel Senapati HQ? Apart from money and time saved due to shorter distance, they can enjoy the benefits of installation of new DC and SP offices in Kanggui. Those people who will be covered under Senapati district after demarcation can also enjoy it because addressing to their problems will be much faster in DC and SP offices of Senapati HQ due to lesser population pressure.

It would not be wrong to accuse UNC for the sorry economic affairs of Sadar Hills. Had UNC or ANSAM not opposed and Sadar Hills been declared 40 years ago, the economic status of Sadar Hills would have been in much progress. Kanggui town would have been adorned with many big and beautiful buildings of the government and private sectors. Economic standing of the denizens of Sadar Hills would have been much better than it is today.

We especially the IPI HAM? speaking group of Kuki are scattered all over the areas of North East overlapping with the area of other communities who are mostly antagonist towards our existence. What was our ancestors thinking when they settled to area as far as Karbi Anglong? Do we find solace till today living among the Karbis in Karbi Anglong and Dimasas in Dima Hasao? What we only receive is a bitter statement from Karbi militants that we are migrants coming from Nagaland and Manipur. The situation in Manipur is no difference. We have been found in every districts of Manipur as a minority group. We are scattered too far as if we like separation from one another. Our bad habits have made us an uninvited guest in those districts be it Ukhrul or Tamenglong though we are the bona fide citizen or rather owner of that land.

UNC and ANSAM are able to show off their mettle anytime because they clearly know our weak points. These two organizations will not drop their voice of Naga ancestral land as long as they are in upper hand. The situation would have been much difference if our population surpasses to those of Naga tribes by 55-45 in the whole of present Senapati district. They would not roar like lion if we have better strategic location, bigger towns and villages.  The population surpass could had happen if we had stuck together in our present demand district and not wander off far in other areas. Dont you think we are also guilty of our fate for we dont prefer to live in one compact area? (See the case of our sparse population spreading in all over hill areas of Manipur).

Imagine that the entire IPI HAM? speaking group is living densely in one big area with no space for other communities. Lets say the compact congregation of all our people in one big area is Sadar Hills with a definite demarcation area of 7000 sq km, no overlapping boundaries with other communities and a population of 500000 (Rough calculation- If we combine all the area we occupy in the whole North-East and our population, the total of it might be around this figure or even greater than this). With that kind of compact area and population, we would be able to build big towns and cities. For example, we would have Kanggui and Motbung towns bustling with people, commercial shops and vehicles just like Kohima. Our neighbours Meiteis and Nagas would not dare to belittle our existence as Kukis. In this situation, nobody would dare to come out in front to oppose our move whatever it is.

We have learned a bitter lesson from Sadar Hills that isolation leads us to nowhere. The failure to fulfill the dreams of Sadar Hills is a living example of how important it is to live together as one big unit to get something. Sadar Hills teaches us to stay together closely. Better late than never. Lets put a brake to our old habits of living in separate village. Rather let take a firm stand to live together in one village and make it into a big town for security and prosperity.  Unity is strength and living together in one unit is prosperity.

DOING AWAY WITH OUR SMALL OUTLOOK

 T. L Kipgen

In the whole universe, we (ipi ham speakers) may be the only tribal community who cannot come to a consensus for the tribes name. I personally feel that the reason for our differences in what should be our tribes name stems out from our reluctant to think outside the box of clannish outlook. Sometimes I do wonder that I belong to no tribe because in the end they (Meitei or Naga tribes) identify me either with my clans name or nomenclatures name. (Manipur context).
I hardly observe any tribes apart from us arguing about clan especially on social media. We can find reasons to argue because we are over clan conscious than any other Manipur tribes. Are we still going to hold on to the legacy of clan jingoism? Others are fairly united because they do not practice the legacy that we have mastered. Who is to blame and why should we carry on the legacy nobody bothers about? The strain of clans loyalty and pride is forcing the present generation to see the differences (among the same clans of a tribe) which is actually not there in reality.

Correct me if Im wrong, there are no tribes in Manipur other than us who have a clan based organization. Im not questioning about the rational behind the clan based institutions which is still prevalent in our community. But what is worrying is that the innocent young men and women may misinterpret the very purpose for which it is instituted. There are every chances that they may develop remote feeling if confined gatherings and conferences are frequent. This will create a lot of confusion to young innocent people. There may be many advantages of having such institutions but what about the disadvantages? This is a chronic illness we've been going through.

I felt excited to read the initiative taken up by the Reconciliation Forum (RF) in Bengaluru published in Eimi Times dated December 7. Mr Misao Hejang Hangmi MSW (Convenor, RF-Bengaluru) rightly pointed out the danger for the second single largest community in Manipur of becoming a minority because the same language speaking people will be counted as 3 different entities (Any Kuki Tribes, Thadou and Mate) in 2022 census. RF is a great move to do away with our confrontationist stand. It is a welcome move to overcome our clan centric approach. Moreover, if it can act as a deterrence to those vested interest who try to disintegrate us for their own profit, then it will be a huge bonus for us. As pointed by him, we need an early reconciliation and consensus for building a single and united tribe where all clans from B to T having Saipikhup, Khamtang etc as traditional dresses satisfactorily stick together.

HERE AND THERE ON NEW LAMBULANE

T.L Kipgen

Without delving deep we can understand that New Lambulane is one of the biggest and advanced Eimi localities in and around Imphal city. It lies in the heart of the city and therefore is an important strategic point for all Eimis who come down from hill districts. The kind of educated peoples, officers and rich peoples that it has produced proclaim loud and clear that it is no less than any Meitei localities in Imphal. It is the pride of not just the Lambulaners but also of our hill brethrens.

But it occurs to me that New Lambulane has failed terribly in public domain. More concrete buildings rose up while the road plummeted to its hell-like condition. Houses are clean and smell good but the drainage and its surrounding are unappealing and smelly. In summer, odourless powder like dust hovers in the air, leaves the unwanted dust particles in bedrooms, kitchens, common rooms etc. Dust does not differentiate between who is rich and who is poor. All are suffering equally from this horrible condition. All are fallen victims of it. In monsoon time, the locality road turns into muddy and slippery field. One becomes extra cautious while maneuvering the uneven road. There is no evenness in the level of the road. It seems the denizens of New Lambulane have mastered the condition and thus dont care whether the road is muddy or black topped.

Outsiders are satirically talking about the condition especially of our lovely turned ugly road condition. One of my friends from T-Colony said to me that that we the people of New Lambulane have great number of rich people but care for our own benefits and not for the society. Some people in fb are claiming that their village road is far better than the road here. It pains me to think that New Lambulane would soon become a mockery playground. There is a lack of co-ordination between denizens, denizens-leaders and betweens leaders. Cant we do slowly and little by little our needful to bring about change in the fate of our road and other condition?

It is human nature to cherish private property and depreciate public property. But there can be no public without you and me. Public property means combine property of yours as well as mine. Private property cannot exist alone out of public property just as you cannot exist alone on earth. Nourishing own property while ignoring public property is like a woman who takes good care of her looks but ignores her other parts of body.

HERE AND THERE ON POLITICS

Malsawm Kipgen

Politics as you know is defined in simple words as the art or science of governance or governing such as a nation, state and various other administrations. Politics is quintessence to our daily lives as much as economics or sciences are. Developed nations have stabled polity. Take for example, U.S.A is developed in terms of polity as well as economy.

Politics can have different connotations according to different walks of life. To minor religious groups, it may mean the authority using undue power in the passing of a law which favours the major religious group. High Court of Maharashtra banning the slaughter of cow or selling of beef is a case in example. To a heart broken lover, cheaters are playing politics by making love until when they benefit and break up the moment there is no gain in the relationship. To a disheartened student, when a teacher resorts to favouritism and practices injustice in giving marks, s/he is doing politics. To an unemployed men and women, the unserious attitude of government in providing a decent job is politics. Finally, many religions do not permit homosexual relationships but today we could see laws not only gives permit but also protects them from society. For religious people, it is unacceptable and such laws are politics of evil.

`Mahatma Gandhi once said, Hate the evil not the evil doers. His words are powerful and full of wisdom. If we eradicate the evil from earth, there will remain no people to do evil things and thus no evil doers. But if someone said to you, Hate the politics and spare the politicians, will you agree with him? Will this not bring smile to those politicians who compromise politics? If first thing is first, is it not the men who created politics for supposed better society and called themselves politicians? Can politics exist by itself? Is it justifiable to put blame on politics which is non-living, which does not exist physically and which cannot think? For all wrong things however though, we curse both, the doers and their doing.

Not everyone can become doctor, engineer or civil servant. Many girls in Manipur choose the profession of nurse soon after their 10+2 in the hope of a better future. Some took the course of BSc (Nursing) and some others ANM and GNM. But this does not guarantee them a fine job in government hospitals. Some lucky ones might have got easy job in government hospitals but most of them have to seat for examination for the limited vacancy notify by the concerned department. Every year in India, SSC and IBPS conduct examination to recruit new staffs in different departments and regions of the country. They notify jobs vacancy along with the necessary requirements such as age and educational qualification. The fulfillment of the given criteria does not necessary mean he/she is selected for the post. One has to undergo intense test to finally select for the given post. Such is the intensity of selection that only the qualified and best candidates are selected and till today there is no question of selected candidates incapable of performing their duties. But why do we have no such criteria in the selection of politicians? Why is there no such intense examination for the selection of the most qualified and best politicians for a job which affects every sphere of life? For a doctor, it is not okay to select anybody but for a politician, it is okay to allow anybody to become politicians? Dont you think that we are not giving much importance in the field which affects us most?

Doctors, engineers, administrators, professors, geographers, historians, contractors, social workers etc all can enter politics and can be called politician. Whether a doctor or a scientist knows anything about constitution, law and democracy, s/he is fit anyway to be become a politician because s/he has money. Is the profession of politics that simple? Are we not compromising our wellbeing by allowing anyone to become a politician? There is no restriction in the field of politics which means thief, rapist, murderer, liar etc can become a politician provided they can hide their true colour from the public. Is this not a contempt to our Constitution and democracy which upholds Satyagraha?

It seems today that famous politicians are all about knowing the art of bhasan (public speech) and saying vikas (development) and eradication of bhrastachaar (corruption) in public gathering during election. Many politicians have mind blowing ability of making lie seem true. Politicians have seemed to be become a better actor than filmy actors.

In a nutshell, politics is inevitable and good politics can come about only when the public do a check on the whereabouts of politician, show sincerity and seriousness on the working of politics and politicians, and start doing something important for good governance one day at a time. Politics must be taken as sacred and politicians must enjoy doing its job (community service) and continue doing research on good politics and most importantly not compromise the sanctity of politics in any given circumstances.
DO GOOD ANYWAY
One late night, daughter of a bank clerk suddenly felt terribly ill. There was no transportation that night because of public unrest. He went to the house of one auto driver, pleaded with him to take them to a nearby hospital. The auto driver was apprehensive of the situation outside plus his own daughter was also lying on the bed with high fever. But his humanity side triumphed over his fear and finally took them to a hospital. The doctors at the hospital successfully treated his daughter. The bank clerk ran out of words to thank the able doctors but completely forgot to thank the auto driver. In one paragraph of Mother Teresas Do it anyway poem, she said, The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Let the people forget our good work but we shall do our good work anyway (service to mankind and God) because Jesus said in Hebrews 6:10 that He never forgets our work and love shown to Him.
BETTER
Believe it or not.
It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of party. (Eccles 7:2)
It is better to trust in the Lord than to depend on man. (Ps 118:8).
It is better to read Bible than to read comments on Fb, Whatsapp, or Twitter.
It is better to give a tithe than to spend the same for buying necessary requirements (Malachi 3: 10).
It is better to visit a not so closed friend who is in hospital than to visit a healthy bestfriend who is at home.
It is better to be in church than to be at home idly.
It is better to give something to a poor than to present a lot of things to a girlfriend who already has many. (Luke 14: 12-14)
It is better to be illiterate but religious than to be educated but fear no God.
It is better to talk directly to a person who does bad things than to talk behind his back. (Proverbs 24:28)

SEASON OF HOPE DELIVERANCE

Malsawm Kipgen

Election is one of the most important personas of democracy. Wikipedia defines election as a formal decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual to hold public office. For layperson, election is a short season of getting something from an individual for the work done by standing in a long queue. For some active people, it is a season of merry making. Does anyone care why election is there periodically and why we do we have to elect?  .

Supreme Court has said that anyone who does not cast his/her vote has no right to complain about the representative. Given the kind of intending candidates one has to choose, the notion of compulsory voting as suggested is quite sardonic. If the intending candidates in every constituencies have the charisma of Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and Anna Hazare, who would not want to cast their valuable vote for their super hero?

Democracy is the same yesterday, today and forever. Democracy was, is and will never be bad for society. Democracy is like a good boy while politics is like a bad boy of the same family. Democracy wants to do good for the family but politics think otherwise. Democracy does not compromise no matter what but politics is ever ready to do anything if it senses gain. And election becomes the energy booster for politics to go at any length.

Election is round the corner in this part of mini India. The momentum of preparation is at the highest. Politicians in this present juncture must be doing intense work; tired and have a sleepless night. Nevertheless, sacrifice for time, money and health are part and parcel of electioneering. Meanwhile, innocent voters are watching the political high drama worthy of Oscar Award played elegantly by political parties of all sizes. The season of delivering hope to the dear voters manifest itself in manifesto, hand-outs, advertisements and public speeches. No season last forever neither it comes quickly that includes the season of election. It becomes therefore very pertinent for the voters to extract something if its even for a day from this season or else the connoisseurs hope deliverers will have it all. How nice it would be if election is based on the prosperity of A-Z voters. Election that we practice or election that we usually think is based on the foundation of gain. What and whose gain? That gain you have on that particular day only as a voter. That gain you have for 5 years after election as a successful candidate. It is better to have prosperity than to have a temporary gain.

It seems that economic development comes second in the measuring device of development in our state. The debate and discussion, allegation and counter- allegation, the play of blame game on the issues of FA, territorial integrity and economic blockade have overshadowed the most important issue i.e. the economic development or rather say economic power for the poor people in the valleys and hills. The higher the volume of talk the higher is the chance of allegation and counter allegation. This talk show will not and cannot feed the hungry mouth. There are poor people among the Meiteis; there are poor people among the Nagas and Kukis. The very idea of economic prosperity for this section of society is desirable and important for building trust and making bond of understanding among different communities. The eradication of poverty including horrible road conditions, non availability of safe drinking water, poor electricity, non availability of teachers and doctors in the remote places of Manipur as well the dispensation of buying capacity to all can be very useful for bridging the gap among three entities of the state. The longer the people are kept in darkness, the more he will become aggressive and uncooperative. The end result can be destructive for the state.

The practice of administering oath to elected representatives is not effective and productive. On the day of oath taking, he or she swears in the name of God or allegiance to truth and then on the next day he/she forgets everything. Sincerity, honesty, diligence, dutiful and truthful is the tree of a good representative. Are these qualities there in the heart and mind of our representatives? How many of them have it? Instead of this old practice of oath taking, a lie detector must be placed before the representatives. One lie, one electric shock. This type of machine is the need of the hour to detect the liar who is lying, who is conspiring and who is deceiving the people. Lets all fold hands and pray to God for a peaceful and fruitful 2017 Manipur State Assembly election. Let's all pray that the hope of a better life given in the election become a reality. Finally, let the wise and honest representatives run our state.
